Mini Challenge Penultimate Round

The penultimate round of the Mini Challenge kicked off under the pouring rain at Donington Park. Located at the end of East Midlands Airport runway, “Av-gas” residue from departing planes makes the circuit particularly slippery when wet, so a challenging weekend was to be expected.

After heavy rain during qualifying, Race 1 started out dry, but conditions deteriorated throughout the day. Two green flag laps were ordered before Race 2 and Andy took a tactical gamble to change to wet tyres. This put him into a pit lane start (the back of the grid), but his gamble paid off as weather conditions worsened. Andy’s tyre change provided a substantial advantage over those with a dry tyre setup, and he picked them off one by one. Sadly he skidded onto the grass carrying too much speed and dropped four positions, finishing the race in seventh.

Overall an exciting weekend with many lessons learned, stay tuned to see what’s in store for the final at Snetterton on 19th – 20th October!
